Sorry, I spaced out and missed the second major thing you wanted me to
try.
I did "rm ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-*" (after saving those files), and
restarted p-d.
cpu % times are all small now, e.g. plasma-desktop not even in the 'top'
top 50 processes, and Xorg at < 1%.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say with the last comment.
Do you want me to attach each of the original (saved)
~/.kde/share/config/plasma* files?
Or, attach copies of the current files, since the problem is still
happening...
I forgot to say that I did a "rm -rf" in ~/.kde/shar
1. I removed the old lock file; no effect
2. I incrementally removed all icons on the desktop; no effect
3. I removed most, but not all, icons (widgets? I'm not sure about the
terminology here)
that are embedded in the menu-bar (which I keep at the bottom of the screen) ;

After update to 13.04, I noticed high cpu percentages for plasma-desktop and
for Xorg.
'top' shows plasma-desktop using 90-100% of a cpu, and Xorg using about 40-50%.
If I
use gdb to attach to the plasma-desktop main process pid, then (of course) p-d
goes
to zero cpu per

More testing, first on (Ubuntu 10.04/OpenOffice 3.2), then again on
(Ubuntu 9.10/OpenOffice 3.1.1), shows more about the problem.
(a) things work better on 10.04/OO 3.2; in particular, if you pre-
select the non-contiguous areas _before_ doing the Insert -> Chart
function, then OO remembers the
