jockey fails to download and install drivers

Public bug reported:
jockey fails to download and install drivers when other apt process is
running (like update-manager). The error message is just that the
process has failed and that a log file was created.
In the log file only the usual
"2012-06-26 23:41:27,128 ERROR: Package fetching failed:
simply executing 'xrandr' on a gnome-terminal with compiz on, blanks and
freezes screen

confirmed on a IBM x60t.
With compiz on, either "detect monitors" in the Display Menu, or Fn+F7 (switch
screen on IBMs) freezes the screen while the system continus to run for a while
(had a skype conversation continuing for some minutes).
