I should note that the bios was upgraded from A04 to A05 since it was
last tested on dapper. If that's likely to have made the difference, i
can boot off of a dapper live cd to test (don't have one available right
now).

I've just tested dvd playback and cd-writing on edgy on the inspiron
9300, and both worked perfectly.

I've tested this again with edgy final, and i get the exact same
behaviour. Following from juan's mention of 'lshal -m' above, i've done
some testing:
1. Boot edgy, run 'lshal -m', press fn+f3:
keypress event is visible
2. Press fn+f3 again:
keypress event does not occur

Reading from the dvd drive in edgy is painfully slow. dd (invoked as: dd
if=/dev/scd0 of=/dev/null bs=100M count=1) reports a read-speed of
~1.8MB/s. The same problem existed in dapper, and i think it's related
to bug #42083.
To clarify, this is using the edgy beta alternate installer. Steps to
reproduce:
1. Boot off of edgy beta alternate installer cd
2. Proceed through steps until you reach the partioner, choosing 'manually edit
partion table'
3. Choose 'confiugre the logical volume manager'

I can confirm this in the edgy i386 beta too. Doing an 'lvm lvscan' in
the console shows that the lv's are being detected alright, but none of
them have been activated. Setting the lv's active manually allows the
partioner to see them and the install works fine then.

inspiron 9300. I haven't tried the above tweaking yet, will post back
when i know if it works or not for me. Possibly related is that i've
been unable to write cds on the t43p also.

dmesg, it contains a bunch of ata errors which look like they're related

The card reader in my dell inspiron 9300 works fine with the latest
dapper updates, it didn't work at all with the default install.

I've had the same issue with the apt acquire::http::proxy being set to
'false' preventing it from working with apt-proxy. With the setting as
is, apt sends a 'GET http://hostname:portnum/ubuntu/etc' request instead
of just 'GET /ubuntu/etc', which causes apt-proxy to (probably
wrongfully) barf.

Found the issue, here's a patch that fixes it. It's been a while since i
last did gtk programming, so it may not be the cleanest way to handle
this. Disabling the menu entry (and keyboard shortcut) until there is
something to save would probably be best.

I tried with the above linked debug xchat-gnome package, same crash, and
the backtrace (attached) looks very similar. I've just tried this with a
fresh user, same crash every time. My locale is LANG=en_IE.UTF-8. Trying
with LANG=C made no difference.
