I can confirm this bug.
I have the same wireless card (AR5212 802.11abg).
As berg commented, other people report, that they got the card working

Hi berg
Thanks a lot for filing a 'real' bugreport for my issue ;) Yes, the bug
you reported is 100% what I have. I'll when I make further progress I'd
report to that bug.
Because I erroneously hijacked this bug(which is about another issue), I
think it shouldn't be marked as a duplicate of yours
Congratulations!
In that case, my comments can be ignored as we weren't experiencing the
same bug.
I'll open a new bug for my issue when I find the time.

Here's a hint, what could have gone wrong when updating to kernel 2.6.20-16:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=457328&page=3
They say, that it's the missing linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16 that causes
atheros to disappear.
I really don't have linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16 installed
Is this the lspci and '/proc/version' output with atheros running or
after atheros vanished?
I have a similar problem (atheros vanished) but for me it happens after
the upgrade to kernel 2.6.20-16-386. So if you have the problem in the
same kernel version we could work on this bug together.
