PC with problem froze soon after bug was reported. It had been up for
nearly 2 hours with fir4efox active most or that time. After rebooting
system was left alone for nearly 6 hours. It has not frozen.
Soon after logging in the updater ran. This top report was taken after
updating finished.

hours of no active use, but staying logged in with firefox active, disks
are churning and not able to type, nor does cursor move. System is
locked up, must power off and reboot.

Thanks for trying.
In 2012 an Ubuntu developer made a private version of 12.04 with PAE
support, so I am still using Ubuntu with my old laptop.
The Ubuntu team has people who could fix this the right way, but as you
said, they are lazy.

I have verified the CD. It is not corrupt.
Further investigation has revealed that Ubuntu 12.04 is now based on
corrupt reasoning. Instead of continuing to be based on non-PAE kernels
and adding PAE support as part of the installation process, using a

initially using 9.04 stable. After an update to 9.04 this problem
appeared. I then upgraded to 9.10. This problem persists. Once
NetworkManger suddenly decided it could manage the wireless interface.

After installing the flash plug-in I am able to watch a CNN news video.
But after watching the first one firefox crashes when I click on the
next video I want to watch. The problem is easily reproduced.
I can find no crash files in /var/crash or elsewhere.
