Removing both "xserver-xorg-video-intel" and deleting
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf file solved the artifact issues on my

This is a massive usability problem an it is assigned to NOBODY
This is the biggest usability problem on 12.04 and a massive deterrent
for anyone upgrading from 10.04 and have a userbase which is used to
Gnome2. Less computer savvy users simply don't find the menu this way.

This should be fixed at least in the LTS version (10.04) ASAP.
Quite a huge inconvinience.

Since then I upgraded my system to Karmic and the problem hasn't
resurfaced yet.

Clearing the /tmp folder doesn't help on my system. If I restart
immediately after the clearing, I get the same slow boot with the disk-
grinding.

I have an ".X0-lock" file which seems to contain only the PID of the X

Why would be slow to delete this?
Could be that this is an ext4 filesystem problem? Does anyone here has
this problem on ext3 or ext2 (/tmp being on this kind of filesystem) ?

I placed debug messages into the init scripts and it seems that the
/lib/init/bootclean.sh script does something very slow.
More precisely the line "rm -f .X*-lock" in the "clean_tmp()" method.

I have a very similar problem with a simple (non-Wubi) installation.
"Activating swapfile swap" hangs around for 90 seconds before
proceeding. The hard-drive is spinning like crazy in that period.
Deleting from the /tmp folder didn't help.

I also have this bug (initrd.img-2.6.28-15-generic), the disk-grinding
takes about 90 seconds.
I also tried to clean /tmp but id didn't help.
I also have VirtualBox installed.
Some nice update caused it because my boot used to be very fast after
the original install.

We also experience this problem.
It seems to be caused by WebStart not being able to handle locally named
Desktop folders.
For example, with the Hungarian local in Jaunty, the Desktop folder is
named Asztal.
If you create a link named as Desktop in your home folder and the link
is named Desktop,
I seem to have the same problem with my Portege m200 with the exception
that I never had it working under my previous installation (Gutsy), only
knew that others managed to fix suspend on the m200.

Has anyone tried this with the final Gutsy?
I have a fresh Gutsy install configured for remote login with xinetd

No matter what I do, I don't get a Gnome login screen, let alone a
