The disconnects are very brief (about 1-2 seconds).
in dmesg i see a lot of:

i agree. Default behaviour is terrible. Using function key is terrible
and difficult.
Just to make alt-f4 you need both hand.
When you press fn change must be permanent (until you press it again).
This is the right way.

With metacity compositing manager i experience massive slowdown on the
whole system when i use wine application like microsoft word. When i
disable compositing manager all work ok and i can use applications under
wine without problem.
I use ubuntu 8.10 64 bit with free ati dr

After some minutes of inactivity mouse and keyboard stop responding.
In bluetooth manager they result always connected even when not working. I have
to manual disconnect them to restart them.

Bluetooth mouse and keyboard work fine at startup but after some inactivity
they lost connection.
