There may be another reason why nano should not be the only editory in /bin for

Nano breaks lines when they become too long and it inserts newlines to do this.
For long configuration lines or shell script lines, this breaks stuff just by

So far, I've not noticed this problem in Edgy, using the same firefox
and thunderbird from the central installation on NFS. So my conclusion
is that it has to be something other than firefox or thunderbird that
consumes memory (under that process ID) or not giving it back

it would really help a lot of people if this was pushed through a bit,
it's a very annoying bug! (and open for about 4 months now)

Please, can this bug be given a higher priority? It seems like a trivial bug to
fix and it will save megawatts in energy worldwide after it is fixed!
Think of the children! It may make the difference between our world and
waterworld ;-)
BTW, with fixed, I mean in an update to Edgy, not in Feist
I don't know if this is a sensible observation, but it appears as if the
second run of firefox/thunderbird seem quite normal or even small in
their use of xorg memory.
(with second run, I mean: start FF/TB, use it, close it, wait until
xrestop/top show they're gone and then start FF/TB again.)

Ok, I've played around a bit with xrestop and I think it is the
combination of firefox/thunderbird and xorg.
top gives a bit misleading indication of the Xorg server it seems,
xrestop gives about 100-250M less memory as total than what "top"

this would block me from installing kubuntu 6.06 on our office desktops.

Public bug reported:
Yesterday I installed dapper (6.06 LTS) on my machine at work and ran
updates rebooted a few times due to other config changes, such as NIS
and NFS. I left it on overnight and this morning I found it had consumed
almost all my memory and swap space (1GB RAM and 2GB of swap).
