Ok, I've played around a bit with xrestop and I think it is the
combination of firefox/thunderbird and xorg.
top gives a bit misleading indication of the Xorg server it seems,
xrestop gives about 100-250M less memory as total than what "top"
indicates.

Using firefox or thunderbird increases the amount of memory used by
xorg-server, this is listed in xrestop as well. Closing them will
release the memory after a while in xrestop as well.

Perhaps the leak is more in firefox and thunderbird than in xorg-server.
but it seems that the xserver isn't totally unaffected either (according
to top).

I'll keep an eye on this for now.

BTW, the firefox and thunderbird I'm using are the versions from
mozilla.org, not ubuntu.
