I'm seeing this on Trusty, on an HP Z420 and an HP Z620, both with
nVidia cards.
It occurs primarily when transitioning between workspaces. I've found
that I can (mostly) work around it by always transitioning first to a
blank workspace (one with no windows, just the background image), and

It is no longer true that image search is unavailable via HTTPS. As far
as I can tell, Google is fully functional via SSL.
Defaulting to using Google via SSL is the right thing to do. I suggest

I went through all of the suggestions mentioned, and then ultimately
found that the problem was that LaTeX wasn't working because something
was screwy in the ~/.texmf-var directory. I moved that directory out of
the way and LaTeX and LyX both started working correctly.

I'm willing to take responsibility for fixing this, since I've fixed it.
What do I need to do to get the fix in? I'm getting tired of patching
it all over again for each release.

I'm seeing this behavior with IBM's Rational Software Architect on Gutsy
AMD64. It looks like the issue is the same, but it's not from the
64-bit libgtk2. Instead, it's from the 32-bit libgtk2 installed by the
ia32-libs package. I'm going to patch and rebuild and see if that fixes
it. Unfortuna
