Meantime there were multiple automatic software updates to X related
packages.
These are the results:
* The good message: Bug described here is solved (desktop switcher does work
as expected, no more crashes / freezes since about 1-2 weeks)
* The bad message: Some other things are broken now:
Yes, previous upgrades "in the good old time (TM)" DID make a backup of
changed configuration files, IF that file was modified by the user. This
rule was usual at least in Debian (woody, sarge) and SuSE. Even some
Ubuntu packages seems to follow this rule:
ca-certificates:
$ ls -ld ca-certificates
Over time -observing this bug every day- I have found another race
condition for this bug:
During X startup, if I see a screen like the attached one with
horizontal control bar moved up some space into the desktop area for 1-2
seconds, the desktop is guaranteed to become instable immediately or
I don't know the exact source.
The update manager did offer me an update from "Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic)"
(name taken from an old Backup of /etc/lsb-release) to current "Ubuntu
10.04.2 LTS (lucid)" - and (after a backup) I did allow this update
(over the internet, of course).
Here are some settings I
Note: Restoring my earlier backuped xorg.conf did *not* solve the
problem with X / xrandr (although some additional options are in effect
now).
So I attempt to make further analysis in bug Bug #736812 .
However: You *should* make a backup from any configuration files before
overwriting them.
Probably I found a race condition for this bug:
* without doing any mouse action (aside from moving it to move focus)
the xrandr command will work fine and my desktop does behave as expected
(after running it).
* Even clicking into a terminal (to get focus) does trigger this bug,
e.g. after run

After updating to 10.04.2 LTS ("lucid") my graphical desktop did behave
buggy sometimes, so I must restart my laptop firstly twice and later
multiple times to get a working environment.
Whilde doing bug analysis I found, that /etc/X11/xorg

Since I did allow the update manager to upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10 (?) to
current DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS" (taken from /etc/lsb-

Especially these 2 things do happen multiple times per
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: update-manager
In the last 2-3 months I sometimes did encounter "404 Not found" messages while
trying to update with the GNOME update applet. So some packages could not be
updated while others *are* ok.
Probably no network problem: reproducable over som
Just now I did discover another detail, maybe interesting to analyze the
problem:
I have a shared boot partition for several linux distributions. And
because I do have a test install of Ubuntu 8.04 too, the appropriate
kernel is / was at /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-19-generic .
