Just now I did discover another detail, maybe interesting to analyze the
problem:

I have a shared boot partition for several linux distributions. And
because I do have a test install of Ubuntu 8.04 too, the appropriate
kernel is / was  at /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-19-generic .

May be some install script did stupidely check existence of that file
and then applyed a Ubuntu 8.04 kernel patch to my Ubuntu 7.10 working
system?
