The 3rd level is a good indicator that we really want a proper DNS name.
I did investigate this very briefly back when this problem first
occurred.
I also think that the nsswitch alteration is a good solution in the
short term. The issue on the long term is that people with .local domain
will see
I can't even try to reproduce the problem anymore. The hardware that
used to have this problem is lng gone.

When I was getting the directory permissions, I noticed that /home/ressu
had 0700 permissions. Adding the proper permissions to that directory
solved the problem.

Xen packaging in Ubuntu is outdated and originates from a source outside
of Debian. This patch will allow the usage of Debian xen package in
Ubuntu. This package requires
Sadly libvirt needs to be changed. xen and xen-3.3 packages provide
conflicting binary packages and thus xen-3.3 needs to be removed in
favor of xen. This leaves libvirt uninstallable.
Not to mention that most tools today that make use of xen use libvirt
and so libvirt needs to be rebuilt (that's
I can forward the fixes to Debian, but both of the patches originate
from upstream and they are pulled to Debian anyway later on. So unless
we can justify a freeze exception for the package there is little point
in overloading the Debian maintainers.
