I have the same issue, on Ubuntu 17.10. I solved it by moving the
download-to directory to home. My "Desktop" is a symlink to
DropBox/Desktop, which is a DropBox, with that may entail.
In summary - my suspicion is that it is DropBox to blame.

Clarification: Images that should NOT be displayed (since they are
"rejected") are used as the representative image in the monthly view,
representing a specific date. Maybe this is only when that date contains
only "rejected" pictures, I am not clear on this. Anyhow, rejected

I found it! Nothing messes modern linux up worse than not having the
"loopback" interface configured properly, to 127.0.0.1, also in
/etc/hosts.
This is the source of the ODDEST bugs!

I got a similar situation to Philippe DUBRULLE above net-booting an
arch= 386 old laptop diskless, from an AMD64 server, all Lucid.
The client freezes just after it is done with initrd. A friend suggested
pinging the machine continuously, and lo and behold I got 7 responses,
before the whole thing
