Still no sound with 8.04, 8.10, and 9.04. I have essentially given up
having sound on my notebook computer with Ubuntu. Sound works fine with
Windows XP.

I tried to respond to your to your suggestion that I set PCM in
"alsmixer -Dhw" to 80 and unmute the channel by replying to your email.
Apparently you did not get my answer. The answer was that following
your suggestion did not make any difference. Still no sound.
