I did a manual compile of 3.1.1 and re-used the script (slightly
modified) and it appears the issue disappeared with the new version.
Reboots no longer causes it to fail to load.

I was searching around about the error mentioned above and found this
bug report. I went and did the research and came across alot of the
same initiatives. I did a clean cli only based install of Ubuntu 8.10
Server (released version) and also added the OpenSSH server option
during install. After
I can also confirm this. Clean install 8.04 upgraded to 8.10
afterwards. Looks like an issue only affecting updates. Note that I
only got that error once during the upgrade.

I found that the last workaround results in my external mouse not
working correctly. The mouse will register one more click than there is
supposed to be. If you go to the mouse panel and try the double-click
check you will find that it immediately lights up on the first click.
