Have similar issues. ASUS notebook, Aspire 4180T, kernel 2.6.35-24-generic (maverick 64bit), optical drive DVDRAM GU10N by HL-DT-ST (at least that's what the device manager says). The kernel parameter Markus describes doesn't work for me. What does work is simply putting any disc in to the drive
