Basically, the Diamond character in the APL385.ttf font does not scale

I have not seen a recurrence of this fault (unlike the 972 other gnome-related
faults I've hit
in Intrepid), but here are a few notes:
- the other two Ubuntu boxes are running Hardy, of some flavor.
- the printer is on a USB connect on one of the other boxes. It MAY have
been connected locally
I'm running Intrepid Alpha 3, and just reinstalled the (July 21?) ATI drivers
from scratch.
That produces bug#247376. AIGLX settings don't appear to be relevant.
So, I consider the ATI drivers to be, at this stage,
completely useless for my work. From the looks of the other bug reports hanging

A quick eyeball scan does not show anything new in envy or xorg-drivers.

I'm running an ATI HD 3450, with Xinerama enabled and apparently working
properly.
HOWEVER, any attempt to log off, or to change users by either the user
switcher or
little-green-man menu, result in black screens and hang. Hard reset is the only
way out: ctrl-alt-bksp doesn't fix it. A
change users from little-green-man icon hangs system. live ssh from
other box dies then.

I found that adding all_generic_ide to the /boot/grub/menu.lst stanza was an OK
workaround, but I do not know
if this affects performance, reliability, etc. Here's the change I made:

This often happens when the system does a soft reboot.
After power-on, I usually have to reboot 2 or 3 times before it takes off.

I looked around, hoping that there would be error log files in /tmp or
somewhere else obvious, but I don't see anything.
There were several logs generated and sent along, if I believe the
crash button stuff on the gnome menu bar...

Just installed a brazillion Hardy patches. Now seeing several sorts
of failures:
- repeated gnome-settings-daemon failures (attached)
- gnome-power-manager failure (See Bug #99505 attachment)
- applet.py failure (See Bug #153610).

Just upgraded a gazillion Hardy components. I was getting gnome-settings-daemon
failures
before (See bug# 210226), but this one looks new to my system.

I've seen this failure a few times on new updates of Hardy for the past week(?)

so.
If it helps at all, the local printer and other hosts are generally powered off
when
I boot this system.
The failure seems to happen more or less spontaneously, shortly after I login
to gnome.
Still fails as of 2008-04-06, with this day's upgrades.

I've observed the following:
1. Some upgrades disable the nvidia graphics driver, dropping me back into
680x480 land.

Hmm. This is a few minutes after the above post. I just connected a laptop
running a 7.04 version
of Ubuntu to the same network, and it quite happily prints the PDF file from
evince
on the laptop to the Lexmark printer.
AND, after that print job completed, I was able to print OK from the deskt
I just upgraded CUPS on two 7.10 systems yesterday, then tried to network the
Lexmark Optra E310 and an Epson Stylus Photo 800, one on each system.
The Epson box's system Gives the "problem connecting to the CUPS server" error
message when I open the System->Administration->Printing window.
