I have the same issue on my Ubuntu 12.04.
I have tried the proposed workaround
echo "gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d" > ~/.xsession
and found it not working as expected: it successfully creates new session on
each connection, although I need to reuse existing local session on DISPLAY :0 .
Card-reader can not work properly. I can read it but when I start to write big
blocks of data then it freeze.
Only reboot can help me.
With ubuntu kernel 3.5 it work so badly than it works with 3.8-rc3...

With this kernel if I run
sudo modprobe -r tg3
or
sudo modprobe tg3
then I have mouted sd-card and system don't freeze after sleep(I did test it 2
or 3 times).
But I must do it manualy everytime. This is better than nothing...)))
