But the "install over ubuntu 16.04" option shouldn't really be
available, since there's no way it can result in a booting system in
this case.

OK, so I used hdajackretask to set jack detection to 'not present' for
the front and back mic inputs, and things work as expected (I can select
them from the 'sound settings' gui)

To manage notifications about
Hal scans both /usr/share/hal and /etc/hal. But if the right
directories in /etc/hal don't exist it errors out. Adding the symlink
means that all the config stuff in /usr/share/hal gets scanned twice.
(and now I know way too much about code that been deprecated for 4
years...)

/lib/udev/rules.d/90-hal.rules
https://launchpad.net/~mjblenner/+archive/ppa-hal
It works for me in the only purpose I care about (some DRM'ed flash
video).
(it also fixes this bug)
