@babbamaic: I've tried 1.24 and yes, the fan stays up and running on
unsupportable levels. Fan control is not working: I only get sensor
readings but no way of controlling the fan.
I needed the update to get the DVD drive working, and am pissed: what
tradeoff is that?

I have the same problem running gutsy on an MSI PR600 laptop.
I ran some scripts/tools to monitor hal (lshal -m), acpi (acpi -Vs) and
changes to the contents of '/proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/*'. It appears that
