I have some new mostly positive findings about the boot failures
concerning my HP ZBook 15, the 1st generation (2013). Importantly, it
has the latest available BIOS installed: L70 Ver. 01.33 . (You may look
at my bug report #1312318 .)
1.) The issue affects also ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS.
2.) The issu
I just add that the status light of the hardware key and the status
shown by the network indicator are tightly coupled (as they should be).
For example, when I turn wifi off using the indicator, the LED light on
the HW button switches its colour from white (signalling the ON status)
to the orange o
No matter in which way I disable it. Both ways of controlling wireless
work perfectly and consistently (contrary to some previous versions of
ubuntu, e.g. 14.04). The only problem is that the system does not
remember its previous wifi status (On or Off) and always starts with
wireless networks On.

It now became possible to boot a live DVD of the latest development
release of ubuntu (64 bit) on my HP ZBook. I installed this system of
the machine's HDD. I have applied all available updates via the
UpdateManager.

Yet another test and verification: I subsequently inserted the DVD disk
into two other PCs (desktop ones). The first one (an old PC with Intel
Core Quad) failed to boot completely, just showing some I/O errors. The
other PC (Intel i7 3930K Extreme) booted only to text console. Both use

I have just verified that the DVD device on the HP Zbook 15 is
physically OK, not damaged.
(I took a DVD with Linux Mint 13 LTS, 64-bit, plugged it into the DVD
drive and the system nicely booted into the live session.) BTW, this
system (Mint 13) uses many components of ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise
1.) The freezing occurs only in the live environment. The starting
process ceases very shortly after it was initiated. See the photo I
attached a while ago.
2.) I do not have knowledge how releases BEFORE SAUCY work or do not
work on the machine. Saucy (13.10) works relatively well.

The script did not modify the brightness even when I run it directly from
