I experience the 2nd problem you mentioned except I use ndiswrapper. My
chipset is bcm43xx. I am able to connect to wireless networks when this
problem arises with network manager by command line (ifdown eth1 && ifup
eth1). This is why I think it's a problem with network manager. But,

I experience this exact problem with an Inspiron 6400 too. It does not happen
in all cases, but it is rare when it's working. Happens in three ways:
1. When I plug in the headphone, both the speaker and the headphone are muted
2. When I plug out the the headphone(which worked properly) the speaker

Plugging headphone on my laptop zv5421ea doesn't desactivate the sound
of the baffles.
It is a very annoying problem when you want to hear music in public
places (train, etc).
