Yep. MATE is indeed stable for me. Gnome is just the desktop
environment. There are shells for the Gnome desktop environment that
provide the interface you see, such as the Gnome3 Shell, Unity, or
Cinnamon (a fork of the gnome shell).

Also I think MATE is based on a version of Gnome 2, which might explain
why this does not occur when I use it. And since unity is just a shell
for Gnome3, it's not surprising that I experience the same thing there.
That could just be a perceptual assumption on my part though.

I have tried Mint 12 and this does occur there as well, which by default
uses a version of Gnome 3 and MGSE. Same exact issue.

I'm experiencing precisely the same behavior described. The panels will
simply disappear while conducting ordinary operations. In my case, the
desktop recovers most of time (not always) - but the frequency - and the
fact this occurs on a fairly regular basis on all of my machines is
terrible.

Hi - as a relative newbie I am confused about this bug. I have a
laserjet 1020 and am running 10.04 and like the above people the printer
stopped working when I upgraded to 10.04. The printer is discovered by
