We are seeing this bug often with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on most of our
servers, with a variety of network cards/drivers (bnx2, tg3, etc).
Here is an example trace:

When installing using a serial console,
/usr/lib/prebaseconfig.d/90console correctly sets up a serial console in
/etc/inittab, but also *disables* all virtual consoles. Apparently there
is a genuine reason for that:
