Same issue after upgrading form 9.10 (karmic) to 10.04 (lucid).
You need to press enter after performing the scan under X. Works flawlessly
under a tty.

I had silent Amarok (Fresh install of Karmic 9.10 + Amarok V2.2.0). On
pressing play the progress bar moved from left to right in 1 second and
no sound came out. Installed package 'libxine-ffmpeg' and it now works.
