I have been plagued by this bug for a very long time. Today I found out,
that for ages there has been an error message in my mysql/mariadb log-
file:
[ERROR] Incorrect definition of table mysql.event: expected column
'sql_mode' at position 14 to hav
the log file is /var/log/mysql/mysqld.err
However, digging deeper, the problem might be related to two instances
of mariadb being present.
pgrep -af mysqld yields
2402 /usr/sbin/mysqld --defaults-file=/etc/mysql/my.cnf
2881 /usr/sbin/mysqld
--defaults-file=/home/linuxfan/.local/share/akonadi

Today (3-Apr-2010) I tested Ubuntu 10.04 Daily build and it fails too.
I tried to start LiveCD with erased "quitet splash" and with add
"radeon.new_pll=0".
System and Gnome started successfully, but then freeze. I switched to console
(Ctrl+Alt+F1) and there is something like this:

There is only blank screen on Notebook Asus A9RP while booting from Live CD
Ubuntu 10.04 Beta1.
I can hear a sound in background when Gnome starts, but I can't see anything.
I've tried to start Live CD with "quiet splash" erased, with no success.

I installed Ubuntu using alternate CD an flickering/shaking was still there.
Then I changed grub2 as you suggested and now everything works perfectly.
I did it this way:
1. add "radeon.new_pll=0" after "quiet splash" to the file
/etc/default/grub :
GRUB_CMD
Can you please tell me how to do it? I dont know how to go to grub options.
I pressed "esc" before boot and during boot process, but I can't see grub.
(Sorry for my disability.)

I haven't installed Kubuntu 7.10 yet, but while I run Live CD, Dolphin's
information side bar and Konqueror's Meta bar are showing the same actions 2x.
For example, when I click on the picture, I can see in Dolphin these actions:
- Compress
- Encrypt File
- Convert To
- Set
