I think you are right, it is the same bug. It seems to happen if a
window pops up while the display with X on it is not selected. The
window popping up in this case is the password box on resume from
suspend
Are you able to get this to work by using the openvpn client? If so,
could you post the configuration file?

I can confirm the problem being reported for VNC. The solution is this:
In your ~/.vnc/xstartup file put the following:
#!/bin/sh
vncconfig -iconic &
eval `dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session`
gnome-session &
