I tried out your system patch on a completely clean 10.04 install.
Though the dots animation screen proior to the login screen is not
visible, log in proceeds perfectly.
Only problem is my Compiz graphics have been reduced to the Ubuntu

It's escape, not shift. And you only need to do this if your GRUB
automatically goes right into the OS.
If you successfully are at the GRUB menu, select the second line,
"recovery mode" rather than the normal boot and select "failsafe
graphics mode" from the menu which eventually appears.

Suspend / Resume no longer works since upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 if lid
is closed before complete suspend process occurs. (Power light
fades/glows like on a Mac machine).
If lid is closed prior to suspend, power runs at full speed, screen is
grey with no mouse other activity

Suspend no longer works pretty much most of the time. On resume the
power light stops it's glow/fade effect and the disk light comes on but
the screen stays black.
Also, this will *always* be triggered if while plugged in to AC power, I
give the "suspend"

The calculator under Ubuntu 9.04 gives for the the calculation
(9-8.7-.3) used to give the answer "-0". It was using base 2 floating.
Prior to 9.04 it gave an answer such as "7.21644966006e-16"
(galculator).
If the new calculator under 9.10 is using base exponent of base 1
Note: Same here, except I have a Dell Latitude X300. The processor was
running full tilt when I took it out of it's case. Computer was quite
hot!
