I have the same sound card as you have but have not been able to fix it with
the fixes mentioned here. My hardware (laptop Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pro V3205)
has an internal microphone which works good (though it has a quite low volume).

Hi, I don't know if you'ce solved this or not. I can confirm this bug as
I just experienced it. I was just playing around with compiz and
rebooted my computer. GNOMEs GL-settings are set to "normal
workspace"-switching appearance. I've found a workaround (see bottom of
this mesage).
