We are not able to test the upstream kernel at this time. The consensus
is that the risk, however unlikely, of extended downtime is too great at

I experience the same issue as OP after a clean install of Ubuntu 16.04
4.4.0-72.
Nothing can be done in recovery mode that takes longer than one minute,
otherwise some timeout fires, console spews several screens of messages
indicating processes being stopped, and it loops back into the recovery
agreed wholeheartedly. this is so frustrating, and unfortunately so
common with open software developers, to "go their own way" without
consideration for, or perhaps understanding of, what may or may not be
intuitive or expected behavior. developers, consider the huge amounts
of users' time wasted

Outside of playing a utube video, it happens when scrolling in firefox
using the mouse roller, and perhaps it is only when I scroll quickly.
Perhaps X can't talk to OpenGL sometimes becaues the board is "backed
up". I wonder what call is generating returning the EAGAIN? Perhaps I
can build a debug
18 times over the past week for me. Haven't lost any work yet. But its
going to happen, right?
It has usually happened when I was in firefox. Will observe under what
conditions. Do you need more people to run app-port-collect? I could
learn how to do that if needed.

I think I can reproduce it at will now by playing a utube video in
firefox. An unusual thing about my system is though I am using an
nvidia 8800GT which is plenty fast enough for Unity compositing, it has
only 128MB of memory.
