Ted, I suggest you try the VLC player and see how that works. It's open
source and it can open pretty much any video or audio file format on the
planet if you have the codecs for 'em. It can play streaming video as
well. I use it for all my vids. And it's available for Ubuntu too I
think. If not, y
Did you check to make sure you have the latest nvdia drivers installed
from the restricted section? a GeForce 2 card would need to use the
legacy drivers.

Did you try going into language support and making sure you have French
language support installed? You mentioned you used English for the
install and French for the keyboard. Ubuntu needs to have french
language support for all applications installed to see the accented
french chaaracters. Using

Problem seems to be related to compiz as the user indicates. He is using
a dual core processor and that may be part of the problem too. Anyone
care to check dual core compatibility?
