Ted, I suggest you try the VLC player and see how that works. It's open source and it can open pretty much any video or audio file format on the planet if you have the codecs for 'em. It can play streaming video as well. I use it for all my vids. And it's available for Ubuntu too I think. If not, you can download the sources from the VLC website and compile it yourself.
