We have a lab in an academic setting of about 20 computers - they all
seem to be replicating this behavior. My personal laptop was doing it
for awhile, but then it quit - so I thought an update took care of it,
but it appears the lab (fully updated Ubuntu 8.04) is still encountering
the problem...
Still an issue for me (slightly)gdm is not fixed (logging in),
however upon logging in everything works, EXCEPT for applications such
as r-base when plotting graphics, etc. The solution for me is to adjust
gdm.conf through System->Administration->Login

Just installed the gutsy beta and have this same exact problem...volume
is audible, but extremely low. I experienced this problem in feisty as
well. Seems to be same exact problem I had in feisty, but was fixed
when updating kernel...but now it is back (ugh!)...sysinfo is below:
