I'm still not certain if this is the most appropriate place to post
about the bug. I am unable to run Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu UNR 9.10 live

My shut down problem was solved after I had to reinstall Hardy Heron on
the IDE drive on 25th October 2008 because of an unrelated issue. From
my Synaptic history log on this day, I note that the first package
updated was acpi-support (0.112) to 0.114. I'm not sure what the cause
of the problem was

Hi Leann
I write to apologise for the delay in my reply to your email but I only

Updated Manager today brought 2.6.24-18-generic to 32 bit HHeron which
didn't boot until I edited menu.lst adding pci=noacpi to the end of the
kernel line. I'll have to manually switch off the power as usual after
shutdown I expect. I'm mystified why my 64 bit HHeron works normally and

I also want to propose that there were/are two bugs, a UUID drive naming
bug and most likely, a separate ACPI handling bug.

I also have Ubuntu 64 bit Ubuntu on a SATA which I successfully upgraded

However, during upgrades and currently the SATA isn't connected. I'm on

Some further observations.
Yesterday I was able to boot Ubuntu 8.04 with 2.6.20-16-generic without any
additions to the kernel line in menu.lst and shut down was normal.
Failure of the shut down process with 2.6.24-16-generic which is now my main
complaint seems to be centered just on the final
