hmm, after some further digging, this bug seems to be a copy of (or derrivitave
issue of) this old bug:

despite the described fix linked to in the comments (I've yet to attempt the
fix to verify anything).

As soon as I got to the partition stage it analyzed my disks worked for
a while then returned a message along the lines of (sorry I didn't write
it down) "Partitioning the free space chosen has failed, too many
primary partitions". I clicked ok
