hmm, after some further digging, this bug seems to be a copy of (or derrivitave issue of) this old bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cdrdao/+bug/2765 despite the described fix linked to in the comments (I've yet to attempt the fix to verify anything).
