I have just installed karmic from a usb-stick and I have the same error (I
don't know if this is relevant for this bug).
However I resolved it by running in a terminal:
$sudo grub-mkdevicemap
$sudo update-grub
--
error: cannot open `/dev/sdb' while attempting to get disk size - grub2 update

Right, actually I just wanted to point out that in creating the package for
jaunty (found in my ppa) I had found the problems reported and, very probably,
the same will be present in the package for karmic.
The file .diff.gz that I had posted is for a karmic package, not for jaunty.

of the my jaunty package:
