I am having a very similar problem during shut down in a Panasonic CF-R8
with alpha 2 Maverick 10.10.
During shut down, the final screen appears, under the name Ubuntu two
white dots turn into red, and it stays like that forever. I have to stop
manually the computer by pressing the power button.
Today I installed some pre-released updates of compiz and other
packages, related with bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-
video-intel/+bug/419328, but the problem remains. I guess they are
completely different bugs. I just had some hope...

I had this problem in a Packard Bell easy note under Ubuntu 9.10 amd64 with an
Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics
Controller (rev 03).
I installed the pre-released updates and I can confirm the problem has been
solved at least for my computer.

Same here. If desktop effects are removed in my Intel Corporation Mobile
945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) it works.
