Issue appeared for me with upgrade of Xubuntu from Raring to Saucy.
Compiled gtk+3.0-3.8.6-0ubuntu2 with Chris Townsend's patch added,
installed, fixed the problem.

Problem still exists on Maverick with CUPS 1.4.4-6ubuntu2.3; same set of
files gets repeatedly opened and never closed. I also had to remove
libpam-smbpass since I couldn't figure out any way to prevent CUPS from
using winbind modules. The only winbind related thing I have installed
is libwbclient0
Additional: the bug is occurring for me on the same laptop (HP Pavilion
dv4 Notebook PC).

This bug still exists with Kubuntu 9.10 and kernel 2.6.31-14.48. As the
original poster says, a backport of the patch would be great; could it
be included in the 2.6.31-15 kernel build?

Followup: it looks like for some reason it was building using the
contents of ../xf86-input-evtouch_0.8.8.orig.tar.gz. I don't really know
my way around dpkg, so I just uninstalled the xserver-xorg-input-evtouch
package, then did a ./configure, make, and make install in the source
directory, which
Hackeron, this doesn't work for me...I did the build process as you
described on a fresh install of Xubuntu Jaunty (on a car PC with an
eGalax touchscreen), and got the build to complete with no errors except
for the failed chunks in the patch that you said to expect. I then
installed the .deb and
Kwave now comes up successfully in Hardy.

Experiencing the same problem after upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy. The updater
completed the installation of new packages and went into the cleanup stage, and
asked me to decide whether to remove obsolete packages. I clicked on the
"review" button, and my X session immediately restarted--saw the
