I have a ASUS 1005PE and have the same issue.
I _do not think this should be fixed_ the issue is a faulty BIOS, see:
http://groups.google.com/group/linux.kernel/browse_thread/thread/3c3cf40adea1f089
I think ASUS should be forced/encouraged to produce a BIOS that does not rely
on an OSI string. The
I have tried 20100426.2 and migration assistant either works, or doesn't crash
- this is good.
I've tried installing 6 times now, and only once did migration assistant not
work, at which time it said "no information available for import" but it _did
not crash_, the install was still successful.
Some more digging, I think this bug is related to this bug here:

Hi,
install of Lucid Desktop Live Daily 2004-04-12 fails.
I downloaded the ISO from here:
http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20100412/lucid-desktop-i386.iso
I used unetbootin to write it to a USB drive and installed on ASUS EeePC 1005PE

I am happy to test. The last .iso I downloaded was beta2 here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing
which had the issue.
Is there a daily build of the ISO that I can download somewhere?
If so, I am happy and willing to do that within 24 hours.

I have the same issue.
My architecture is different, Intel Atom n450.
I was attempting to install lucid Beta2 netbook-i386
Interestingly enough, I have installed Beta 1, and been running it quite
okay since B1 come out.
Could this be a regression?
Should I submit anything else?

Hi Tom,
can you confirm what kernel you are using that works on karmic, your output of
uname -r
says 2.6.30-9
but you say you are using 2.6.31
I could imagine that karmic would work if downgraded to 2.6.30

It appeared to get broken when trying to fix a wheel mouse issue where
horizontal scrolling was inverted, see here:
