After reading all of this, maybe this summary might help:
1) the boot process is trying to do an file system check
2) because of an issue with the start process you can't see the prompt

As a work around for those wanting to use their system
1) when the screen goes blank and hard drive light stops - type your password 
eg:
   password123 [Enter]
2) run a file system check, eg:
  fsck -y /dev/sda [enter]
3) reboot your system, eg:
  reboot [enter]

NOTE:
* This does not solve the underlying issue
* but it does allow the system to continue to boot.

My hardware is an ASUS EeePC 4G, which uses the Intel Driver mentioned
above.
