I had the same bug using latest Ubuntu Lucid (i386).
I fix the problem after installing latest maverick kernel from
ppa:kernel-ppa/ppa
(linux-image-generic-lts-backport-maverick 2.6.35-12-generic)
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kernel-ppa/ppa
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install linux-
I had the same bug using latest Ubuntu Lucid (i386).

I can confirm that the problem occur when two instances of gnome-
screensaver are launched by the system. For my part, the fact that 2
gnome-screensaver instances are launch at startup is unknown and appears
randomly.

This critical bug is still present on Ubuntu 10.04 i386 (Dell Inspiron 510m)
After entering the password to unlock the session, the gnome-screensaver
application use about 80% to 90% CPU is hang on the "verifying" state.
The only way to proceed is to log in through a virtual console and kill

i had the same problem after pugrading from intreprid to jaunty
The following modification in the file /usr/share/xsessions/xfce.desktop
solve the problem
replace :
Exec=startxfce4
with :
Exec=/usr/bin/startxfce4
Please note this bug concern xfce4-utils (4.6.0-1ubuntu1)
