This bug was still present in 9.10 (as of December 2009).
I am no longer able to test this as the PC failed and has been scrapped

My report is also network related. The error messages after the long
time out list dhcp client errors, so I don't think ALSA is really
involved. My PC shuts down quickly on my office network, but takes
minutes on an Aztech DSL router, so this bug depends on the dhcp server

I measured the shutdown stall as 2.5 minutes at the "Shutting down ALSA" line,
followed by some rapid error messages before shutdown.
Todays update has made the PC go to a progress bar shutdown, pausing

8.04 release version
Had it again. This time I also had a network problem, dhcp had failed.
Checked in the Sessions - Startup Programs tab and Network Manager was
unchecked and there was still a Wicd entry , although I had uninstalled
Wicd before upgrading from 7.10.
I will remove all traces of W

I have recreated the "as root" menu entry with the gksu -u root
/usr/bin/wireshark command line as in 7.10
When I select this, wireshark starts and asks for password.
The interfaces are shown in the capture menu
Selecting an interface causes the capture window to stop responding.
