That got me no sound at all, in smplayer, banshee, or minecr
11.10 promptly *stopped* producing any sound at all. I tried replacing
the upgrade with a fresh install, to no avail. After about the 6th or
8th popup "suggestion", I upgraded to 12.01, and now it's back to
glitchy sound with the same settings. (At least the sound-settings
panel is somewhat impr
(That is, I have *no* sound in smplayer or Minecraft (which is Java-
based).

overhasty in thinking this was the same bug. The other bug I was
looking at affects K3B as well, but IIRC brasero aborts early, and turns
DVD-R's into coasters.

More info:
(1) the progressive damage seems to happen when a program refreshes
(2) I can't believe I didn't notice this before, but for any given
program/refresh, the damage is consistent for each letter -- that is, it's the
letter images (at some level) that are actually being corrupted! The
Yesterday's (April 27, 2009) updates to various font libraries/programs
didn't help either.
