I'm dropping this complaint. Windows 7 fails as well, so it is a
firewall problem.

Turned off onboard audio via BIOS and now USB audio works just fine...

since my upgrade to maverick my usb sound card is not detected completely.
until this morning's reboot with latest updates ALSA could see the card, but
not Pulseaudio. Now ALSA does not detect it either. dmesg shows this error:
snd-usb-audio: probe of 2-5.4:1.0 failed with error -5. Details
updated 638790 with this info: since my upgrade to maverick my usb sound card
is not detected completely. until this morning's reboot with latest updates
ALSA could see the card, but not Pulseaudio. Now ALSA does not detect it
either. dmesg shows this error:

Any more advice on this? I can use the device via VLC using ALSA, but
can't use Pulseaudio
(eg, it does not appear on Sound Preferences and I can't watch Youtube vids).

OK, I am able to use the headphones with VLC, as VLC sees them as a
choice, but not Sound Preferences.

That did not make the device appear in Sound Preferences. Is it in
conflict with the digital TV tuner?

After erasing and logout/in the device still does not work nor appears
in the Sound Preferences dialog. Is this due to a clash with the other
devices, including a digital tv tuner, which does appear in the list?
