I just tried the nouveau driver in 4.9.0-11-generic. Now while it didn't

apport-collect 337604 , but I got a traceback (pasted below at the end).
Lucid would not boot with the current kernel from the PPA.

I have always had Subpixel ordering set to "RGB", in conjunction with
full subpixel LCD smoothing. I have very consistently seen the bug occur
in QT based applications. It happens seemingly randomly, however: the
fonts will be fine one minute, then scrambled the next. I always run a
Gnome desktop.
My laptop screen native resolution is 1280x800. It is possible to have
the notifications disappear off the screen altogether when the
resolution is set to 800x600. They are partly visible when the
resolution is 1024x768.

I dont' know if this bug is still present in jaunty or not (my touchpad
"scrollwheel" is not working!), but I agree it is an extremely annoying
bug and I very much hope it can be fixed for jaunty.

A cause of the problem appears to be that the upgrade process related in
this line in the xorg.conf file:
Virtual 19201440
Commenting this out resulted in fonts which are close to normal, and
xdpyinfo now reports a resolution of 101x101 dots per inch.

I was running the FOSS Nvidia driver when I first saw this bug.
Switching to the the binary non-free driver produces different results,
with the same DisplaySize results in much smaller fonts.
WIth either the non free or the free driver, until the bug is fixed the
DisplaySize option is vital to be
I think this bug can be closed, as it does not affect Thunderbird 2.0x
and therefor Gutsy Gibbon is fine.
