I have a similar/related problem that began occuring after upgrading to
ubuntu 12.04, but mine occurs during boot. Approximately 1 out of 5
times, the boot fails with a segfault in libfreetype.so.6.8.0 when
gnome-shell starts up. It exibits 2 different symptoms. To recover from

Please look at the additional postings I made on bugs.launchpad.net. I
discovered that it was not an actual crash, but a mistaken normal exit,
that resulted from changing the volume level (either by slider or by
mouse wheel). This may be a multi-threading/interrupt issue.

Additional information on rhythmbox startup problem, and volume crash
results. After system reset, first attempt to startup rhythmbox from
gnome applications menu (or desktop launcher) blinks program box in
bottom status line, then installs icon in gnome's upper right action

I agree that it may be the same as Bug #455421. Here is some additional
information. In trying to generate the manual backtrace, I get assert
errors whenever launching rhythmbox from the command line. The program
then hangs, and I must use ctrl-c to recover. The backtrace showing this

Rhythmbox crashes when changing volume level with the built in control.
It only occurs when a song is actually playing. If the song is paused,
the program does not crash. The crash occurs both when using the slider
