Ok, so my #3 is just because "emacs" is blacklisted for appmenu-gtk
while "emacs-snapshot-gtk" is not. Still, this is an unsatisfactory
solution for an emacs user who is actually trying to adapt to unity. Is

menu scheme?

I can verify Pieter's comments. I too am on Ubuntu 12.04 with Cassou's
emacs-snapshot, all completely up to date. There are no other versions
of emacs installed.
1. If I start "emacs-snapshot-gtk" from Unity, the global Unity menu
for emacs is static, and there is no menu bar on the emacs windo

I just read on ctan.org that template and xparse are part of the xbase
bundle, which itself seems to be part of the xpackages bundle. The
xpackages bundle in turn requires the expl3 bundle. FWIW, I just
installed the expl3 and xpackages bundles into my own ~/texmf/tex/latex
directory, and xfrac

I an currently running Hardy on both my machines and I do not see these

Ok, I tried this with the Hardy live environment and the problem seems

Yes, the problem exists in a completely up-to-date gutsy (I was using
gutsy when I first reported it). As I said in my second post, simply
resizing the window causes the dvi file to be displayed properly, but it
is a bit of an annoyance to have to do this every time. I have no idea

Hmmm, I just found that if I resize the xdvi window then the dvi file is
suddenly displayed and all is well. The initial problem seems to occur
regardless of the initial window geometry, and is fixed by resizing.
Just moving the window does not do the trick.
Interestingly, if I click on the windo

In case this wasn't clear, I meant to say that I had been running emacs-

I had the same problem. It seems that the emacsen-common package was
refusing to install two of its files (/etc/emacs/site-start.el and
/etc/emacs/site-start.d/00debian-vars.el) and this caused the byte-
compilation of .el files to fail. I was able to fix this by first
installing the emacsen-comm
