Binary package hint: xserver-xorg
When X is running, the recovery stuff integrated in the xserver seems to
prevent the PC to be shut down via console or ssh.
Use case:
- You start your multimedia pc
- You ssh to it while watching a movie
- Afterwards you decide to shut it

I built a test kernel using the following commands (last line is the
kernel it actually built for you, 17.32 contained the fix for this bug):
sudo aptitude install linux-kernel-devel fakeroot build-essential

According to http://ntfs-3g.org/releases.html there was a bug found that
could cause random data corruptions from version 1.0 to 1.2412. The
recent 1.2506 release fixed this issue. Is it possible to do a SRU with
the new ntfs-3g version?

This bug seems to be (accidently?) fixed in hardy. I got the same
problem you had in gutsy and dist-upgrading to hardy fixed the issue.
Please report if it still doesn't work for you in hardy.
